Kill count just went to four. With that, a little tranquility. This page was actually a lot of work all around. I drew those trees digital, line by line. It just really took a long time. Noah rocked this page as usual on colors.
Well, I don’t have time to say much because I am still working on your commissions. This is the current state of my desk:
I took these pics yesterday, so this is where I was at then… halfway. I put them all over my bed but there was definitely not enough room for all of them.
So, as you can see, I’m busy. My goal was to be done by the end of today but I don’t think that will happen. Hopefully over the weekend I will finish. You guys ordered WAY more walnut ink paintings than I expected, which take the longest, plus I have just been enjoying drawing some of these a little too much.
See you back here on Wednesday!
Ethan
The artwork on this page is incredible!
I agree. This is a wonderful page to show to people who question how much art is in comics.
Best page yet! I love the spittle, and the utter contrast between the scenes.
Is she not chained to the tree? Or is that just me?
… for that matter, it also looks as though Gogs is no longer chained?
anyway, great comic, one of my favs now. Along with Axe Cop.
I was just wondering the same thing about Andrea. Looks like she’s in front of the chains.
They have their jackets on backwards over the chains.
good work Bearmageddon explainer. Yes, they have their jackets over themselves like blankets, covering the chains.
Just wanted to say that I love the comic so far. I know you’ve been somewhat self-conscious about the slow build up, but – even as someone who is very picky about storytelling – I think you’ve been handling it really well! Thanks for sharing Bearmageddon with us.
On the subject of the comics/art Q&As you’ve been doing, I love your coloring style. Have you ever considered doing a video of your artistic process? I have no idea how much trouble that would be, but I always love seeing how people use their tools.
Thanks! That would be one for Noah Maas to answer. He has some crazy mad science behind his coloring process, he is pretty awesome at it. I do have my own coloring techniques but I try to avoid coloring at all costs.
The LIGHTING. Great work by all as usual. Looks like Flute Co–er, Jack–cleaned up his nose a little bit. 🙂 Bring on the kill-o-meter!
I think it’s unfair that the kill-o-meter is so human-centric. I mean we’ve lost at least one octobear, and that brave soul that ran out in front of the trucks so that the other bears could have flute de jeur.
I think we have to have a human death toll, a bear death toll and an “other” death toll.
Beautiful page, man. Killer lighting (see what I did there…?).
In Memoriam of Flute Cop (Jack)
Where was the fourth kill? I only saw 3… steve, flute cop, and the guy in the truck.
The security guard at Wow-Mart. (Which was incidentally the first page I worked on.)
The police officer in the back of WOW mart (I had to go back and look for them myself). Also, there have been 2 dead bears (1 mutant from the sewer and 1 normal at a traffic light).
Did he really just kill Flute Cop?
…I suppose he can still come back later as Bear Cop, since we didn’t see him *actually* die.
I see Joel making his move. How sly.
The first kill was the police officer behind Wow-Mart.
I have to wonder why the bears we are seeing are only Grizzlies. Are the more numerous black bears being held for reserve? Are bears in zoos in on it too?
Keep up the good work.
This might turn out to be like the movie Frogs in which as far as I can tell it was actually toads who were the ringleaders. This might really be Grizzlygeddon, but if Ethan had named it that it would not beArmaggedon.
hopefully later in full scale global Bearmogedon there will be a montage with Pandas in China and some freaked out Eskimos running from an Octo-polar Bear
I love the art. The stars in panel 3 are awesome.
RIP FLUTE COP NEVER FORGET
Is it just me, or does Joel look like a young ABRAHAM LINCOLN, EXPLOSION GOD?
Just noticed the birds. That’s awesome.
it’s so hard to pull off the cinematic things in a comic book… no sound, no movement, and no detailed descriptions (like in a book). You just draw the picture and hope people feel what you felt.
Poor Flute Cop. I feel sorry for that guy 🙁 I can only pray that he is not just dead. For now I’m not counting this panel for a kill but I doubt it.
I don’t think that relationship is going to work out well.
How long do those commissions take to make?
Pencil sketches take around 10-15 minutes. Ink take anywhere from 15-25 minutes and the walnut ink paintings take 20-45 minutes. I have been putting a lot of work into most of these so they are taking longer but turning out great. Most of these look much better than the samples I had online (in my opinion) this is some of the best brush work I have ever done.
I love that panel where the bear attacks Flute Cop. Also, last panel is adorable!
Flute Cop! NOOOOOOOOOOO
The thing is, unlike the documentary, Axe Cop, this is just a story; Flute Cop is not really dead, despite the fact that his character, Jack, almost certainly is.
On the other hand, even if Flute Cop -is- no longer with us, Ralph Wrinkles can always bring him back to life using healing eye lasers. That is, after Axe Cop retrieves his remains from the bear’s stomach.
By the way, Ethan, I freaking -love- this page–everything from the action and “cinematography” to the fact that I feel like I know exactly how Joel feels in the last panel.
My only gripe is that a portion of the moon appears to be missing, rather than simply in shadow, but that is a moot point, anyhow.
Thanks for using the word “cinematography”, that makes me feel good because I really did want this to feel cinematic. As for the moon… I had to check my original inks, because I always make sure it’s a whole moon with a black shadow, and sure enough I did it right. Blame falls on the colorists on this one. They are anti-science.
Improper depiction of the moon = anti-science.
You, sir, are my hero.
Those kids are so screwed.
I sure was hoping to see my commission on the bed there, but no such luck. I’m left in suspense…
I did yours last night. Don’t worry it turned out great 🙂
Ahhh…..the calm before the storm. This story is gettin’ good!
thanks!
I really enjoy how this series is big enough to have tons of people checking it out, while it is small enough so that you can talk to the writer himself. Keep up the good work Eef!
I’d like to add my weird, almost entirely unrelated fanart to your growing archive. Thanks for making such a totally awesome comic!

Somehow I don’t think this is Joel’s hand on her shoulder…
Love the trees, man.
Dammit this needs to be made into a survival horror game.
Man, I know Bearmageddon doesn’t usually update until after noon – but I can’t help myself, I check the site like ten times between 9 am and 12. Someday… SOMEDAY I will catch an early update, and it’ll all be worth it…
Hey, I noticed in the center of the 2nd picture the fight page between Fwinky Dog and Ralph Wrinkles: oh man, that’s one I wish I had, maybe as a desktop wallpaper. Too kewl!
given the events about to take place i think smelling of fungus is the least of that hippie’s worrys
I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you create this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you? Plz respond as I’m looking to design my own blog and would like to know where u got this from. kudos
This just gets better and better and I love that effect for the bear salivia and the whole story in general
That guy with the shades is SO flute cop
